[edit] Athens Library

The Athens Library is a part of the Marathon County Public Library (MCPL), a network of nine public libraries throughout Marathon County, Wisconsin. Under the auspices of MCPL, the Athens Library (a.k.a. "MCPL Athens") is also considered a member of the Wisconsin Valley Library Service, one of 17 state-level library consortia in Wisconsin, USA.[4]

The Athens Library began in the early 1900's as a small collection of books in the Bloczyski Hotel. In 1926, the Athens Women’s Club took over management of the library and moved the collection to the Athens Bank.[5]

The library again moved in 1941, this time to the Community Hall. In 1947, the Athens Library joined the Marathon County Library. The Marathon County Library and Wausau Public Library merged to form the Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) in 1973. At this time the Athens Library became a branch of MCPL.[6]

A county-wide building program created new quarters for the Athens Library. Completed in August 1996, the remodeled space made it possible for the library to quadruple the number of books held at the Athens Branch Library and to offer a wider range of programs to children.[7]

[edit] Education

The Athens School District is made up of five schools. There are two parochial schools, Athens Elementary School, Athens Middle School and Athens High School. The middle and high schools share the same building. The Athens School District belongs to the Marawood Conference. Its mascot is the Fighting Bluejay.
