Athani (Kannada: ಅಥಣಿ) is a town in Belagavi district of Karnataka, India. It is 150 km away from Belagavi city and 75 km from Bijapur. The main profession here is agriculture. The river Krishna flows through Athani Taluk.

Athani is connected to various places like Bijapur, Miraj, Sangli, Chikkodi, Ugar, and Jamkhandi. The nearest railway station is Ugar railway station which is 35 km from the town. Belgaum Airport is the nearest airport. Athani is in Belgaum District.

As of 2001 India census,[1] Athani had a population of 59,200. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Athani has typical North Karnataka culture. Janapada (folk) songs and dances are found in villages surrounding Athani.

Athani has produced many well known Kannada poets and writers. Its contribution to Kannada literature is a lot.

Athani Taluk has a total Geographical area of 1995.7 Square kilometres[2] . This includes 89 inhabited villages and hamlets with rural population of 461400 souls as per 2001 census. The taluk is bounded by Sangli district of Maharashtra. 74% of the total geographical area is used for cultivation. Geologically the area is covered by Deccan Trap formation. The average Annual rainfall is 582 mm. The two rivers that flow here are, Krishna and Agrani. Agrani is beside the Tanvashi village.

The gram devata of Athani is the Siddeswara. The Siddheshwara Temple is very famous and is folked by the locals on Mondays. Sri Shivyogi Murughendra Swamiji's birth place, Nadi Ingalgav falls in the Athani taluk. Kokatnoor Yallama, Katageri Lakkavva, Avarkhod Hanumappa are other holy places that draw devotees even from Maharashtra.

The five large towns of Athani Taluk (sorted in order of decreasing population) are Athani, Ugar, Ainapur, Kagwad and Shedbal

KLE (Karnataka Lingayat Education) Society is the premiere educational institutions of Karnataka with its head office located in Belgaum which is the district head quarter of Athani. KLE has a degree college, a high school and a primary school in Athani.

Jadhavaji Anandji(JA) Education society is one of the premier education institutes of Athani.

Sanjay Gandhi Education Trust's English Medium School, Athani is the most preferred school.
