Soundwave is an annual music festival held in major cities around Australia. The festival originated in Perth, Western Australia and began travelling to the other Australian capital cities in 2007. It features a number of international and Australian music acts, from various genres including rock, metal and punk.[1] The festival has been headlined by Deftones, The Offspring, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More and Iron Maiden. Co-headliners of the festival since its inception include +44, Incubus, Alice in Chains, Bloodhound Gang, Lamb of God, Jane's Addiction, Jimmy Eat World, Queens of the Stone Age and Slayer. The festival is run and promoted by Soundwave Touring, who also promote tours for bands and musicians each year.

The promoters made an unsuccessful attempt to establish Soundwave Revolution, a spin-off festival which would have begun in late 2011.[2] The Counter-Revolution festival was then launched, however, to compensate for the cancellation of Soundwave Revolution.

The Soundwave festival originated in Perth,[3] as a smaller festival known as Gravity Soundwave within the Gravity Games.[4] The Gravity Games were held in South Perth along the Swan River, being based mainly on water-based and action sports. The event was sponsored by Vodafone in its first year, with the company reportedly committing one million dollars to the event. Gravity Soundwave provided the music side of the festival, which took place at McCallum Park alongside the Swan River.[5]

Gravity Soundwave was first introduced in the festival's first year, which was held on 14 and 15 October 2004. American pop punk band Good Charlotte effectively became the first headline act of Soundwave, when they performed in the festival's first night along with Gyroscope and One Dollar Short.[5] The following night featured Unwritten Law, Regurgitator, MxPx, Lagwagon and Last Year's Hero.[5]

The 2005 festival was again presented by Vodafone, being held on the night of 8 October. Gravity Soundwave was headlined by Grinspoon, with it also featuring American acts Unwritten Law, Reel Big Fish, and Goldfinger.[4]

The third and final year of the Gravity Games festival in Perth was moved to December 2006, instead of October. Gravity Soundwave featured American act Aiden, local Australian bands Gyroscope, Kisschasy, Parkway Drive, The Getaway Plan and New Zealanders Goodnight Nurse.[6]

In 2007 the festival expanded to include Sydney and Brisbane, and increased the number of bands performing. A number of the artists featured in the 2007 Festival had previously played at the Soundwave festival in Perth, including Unwritten Law, MxPx and Parkway Drive.

The 2008 Soundwave festival was expanded to include dates in five states of Australia with the addition of dates in Melbourne and Adelaide. The expanded Festival featured five stages compared to three the previous year.

All cancelled acts were replaced with the exception of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.[7]

55 international bands were confirmed to take part in the 2009 installment of the Soundwave festival, as announced on 24 September 2008.[11] The 2009 festival expanded to six stages due to the extra bands playing this year.

The festival was headlined by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails,[3] with other co-headlining acts including Alice in Chains, Bloodhound Gang and Lamb of God.[12] A second round of announcements in November 2008 confirmed additional acts would include The Dillinger Escape Plan (replaced Scars on Broadway), Jack's Mannequin, Underoath, Forever the Sickest Kids and All That Remains.[13]

It was announced that the presenters of the United Kingdom's reality stunt television show Dirty Sanchez and Finnish stuntmen The Dudesons would be masters of ceremonies at Soundwave 2009.[14]

The performers for Soundwave 2010 were announced on 13 August 2009. The festival was headlined by American rock bands Faith No More, Jimmy Eat World and Jane's Addiction. The events took place as per usual, in late February and early March – at the same locations as 2009. Most acts were from the United States, United Kingdom or Canada, one Finnish band, HIM, and a Swedish band, Meshuggah.[17] A second announcement with extra artists was released on 13 October, including Placebo and Anthrax.[18] Glassjaw were the last band announced in November 2009, with This Is Hell being the replacement to Maximum the Hormone, who cancelled due to their drummer being unfit to play.[19] The Devil Wears Prada also cancelled due to an offer to play with Killswitch Engage, being replaced by Architects.[20] It was announced on 5 February that My Chemical Romance would be cancelling their position on the tour due to unforeseen circumstances concerning the health of the band's lead vocalist (which later lead to the announcement that their drummer had left the band); Jimmy Eat World were announced as their replacement.

Soundwave confirmed eight acts for Soundwave 2011 prior to the first official announcement, including The Blackout, Protest the Hero, Less Than Jake, Mad Caddies, A Skylit Drive, All That Remains, The Ataris and Trash Talk.[22][23] It was then revealed that The Starting Line would reunite for the festival, as a part of a bill that was said to feature almost 70 acts.[24] The full lineup was leaked 24 hours prior to the official announcement and confirmed on the festival promoter's Twitter page.[25] Soundwave then confirmed the leaked lineup in their primary announcement on 5 August 2010, with Iron Maiden and Queens of the Stone Age headlining.[22] The second announcement on 17 September consisted of an additional 15 bands, including One Day as a Lion, Bullet for My Valentine, Murderdolls, Millencolin, Bring Me the Horizon and Coheed and Cambria. On 29 October it was announced that Alesana would no longer feature after a change of contract, they were replaced by Polar Bear Club. It was also announced that A Skylit Drive would also not be playing after taking a chance to open for Underoath. They were replaced by Blessthefall. Indie rock band This Town Needs Guns were announced as the 70th band to join the lineup. Although Avenged Sevenfold were scheduled to play the festival, the group announced that they were pulling out, and informed their fans that they would visit Australia soon on a headlining tour of their own.[26]

The festival expanded to eight stages in 2011.

CKY guitarist Chad I Ginsburg confirmed on 13 May 2011 that the band had been added to the lineup through his official Twitter account.[31] [32][33] The reunited Coal Chamber announced on September 26th that they would be reuniting specifically to play Soundwave 2012. AJ Maddah has quoted from his Twitter that there will be two announcements. The first announcement was announced on the 7th of October and the second announcement was pushed earlier than expected to the 19th of October. Sources are also reporting that Saves The Day will play their own set and Weezer's Pinkerton album in its entirety. Hole pulled out of the Soundwave line up due to Courtney Love not wanting to share a stage with Limp Bizkit. On November 18th, Bush were announced as Hole's replacement along with 12 other bands for the festival including The Black Dahlia Murder, In Flames, In This Moment, These Kids Wear Crowns, and Black Tide. Dragonforce were the second band to pull out of the lineup due to recording delays with their upcoming album;[34] they were replaced with Switchfoot and Paradise Lost.
