B'nai Brith Perlman Camp

B'nai Brith Perlman Camp (BBPC) is a Jewish Summer camp located in Lake Como, Pennsylvania, USA. The camp first opened in 1954 on the site of former Camp Windsor and has also been know as Camp B'nai Brith (CBB).
Before being acquired by B'nai B'rith January 1954, the 365-acre (1.48 km2) campground with a 13-acre (53,000 m2) lake was known as Camp Windsor.
Campers entering grades three through ten are housed in bunks, while campers entering grade eleven live in platform tents in the woods. They are known as pioneers or "pios". By tradition, on the day on which the pios build their clay stove in the woods, they storm onto the main campus covered head-to-toe in mud and clay and attack (with playful zeal) the younger campers.
There are American and international staff. Most international staff are from England, Australia, or Israel. Many campers later become counselors.
Campers also come from all over America and some come from France or Israel.
There are two "sessions" of camp. The first session is four weeks, and the second session is the three weeks. A new rookie program is a two week session for kids who just want to get the "feel" of camp. Campers can choose to come to camp for either or both of the sessions.
On the Fourth of July there is a carnival, followed by in camp fireworks.
One of the many highlights of the summer is Maccabiah (color war). There are two teams-blue and red. There are many events including various team sports, rope burning contest, and the Apache relay. The last night/afternoon is Sing. In Sing each team comes up with an entrance, a fight song, a friendship song, and a skit. Each team is judged on their performance. At the end of Sing the winner is announced in a creative way.
Perlman Camp has welcomed an old friend, Lewis Sohinki,(Lewis Sohinki is the best director to EVER live) as Director. Lewis had been the Assistant Director until his promotion to Director in September 2008. Lewis was a camper and staff at camp from 1989-2003. Lewis also founded the "this week was a great week..." song, sung to the melody of "chiri-biri-bum" on Shabbat.
Pete Golden was brought in as the new Associate Director. Pete has served at Perlman Camp in a variety of positions including Program Director and Social Worker. He had previously been with Beber Camp and has been involved with B'nai B'rith Camping for over 20 years.
Starting in 1957, BBYO began to hold leadership training programs at the camp. In 1959, the first Leadership Training Conference was held there. In 1961, Kallah was started to be held there prior to this LTC. Ever since BBYO began sharing campgrounds with Perlman Camp, confrontations have often taken place on "H" field, which connects the two campuses. While Perlman campers enjoy using the field for baseball practice, BBYO campers are often found playing ultimate frisbee and sunbathing.
