The term bête noire (pronounced /ˌbeɪtˈnwɑr/ or /bɛtˈnwɑr/; French: [bɛtnwaʀ], "dark beast") is used to refer to an object or abstract idea that is particularly disliked or avoided. The phrase is used in several pop culture terms:
