"B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)" is a song by British singer and DJ Eliza Rose and producer Interplanetary Criminal. The single, along with its B-side "Move to The" was first released on 15 June 2022, by Rose's independent company Rosebud Recordings.[2] As the song grew in popularity in July 2022, it was picked up by Warner Music UK, who released a radio edit on 12 August 2022. "B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)" topped the UK Singles Chart, becoming the 1,400th single to do so. Outside the United Kingdom, "B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)" topped the charts in the Republic of Ireland and peaked within the top ten of the charts in Australia, Lithuania and New Zealand.[3][4] The song samples the LL w/ Love RC[5] mix of "Let the Beat Hit 'Em" by Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, which had got to number 49 as "Let the Beat Hit 'Em, Part 2"[6] in 1991.
Background
Eliza had been a DJ on the London circuit for 7 years. In February 2022, Eliza signed to One House. According to Rose, the song originated when she was provided the beat by Manchester-based producer DJ Zach Bruce (Interplanetary Criminal).[7] She then wrote majority of the song within a few minutes, emphasising adding "cutesy" elements as well as "grittiness".[8] She detailed the thought process behind the song in an interview, saying: "This track is so nostalgic. When I first heard the beat it gave me instant memories of growing up in the 90s and the bubblegum-tinged dance music from that time. Going on seaside holidays, hanging around the surreal atmospheres of the arcade, meeting boys, and being cute and flirty. Then you have the "Baddest of Them All" lyric that counteracts that innocence and adds the edge, which came to me at just the right time via a Jackie Brown Blaxploitation poster. It definitely reflects the two contrasting aspects of my personality. Girly and cutesie, but a bit of a bad gal too!"[9] B.O.T.A. was the first single worked One House and Eliza worked on together under Eliza's Rosebud alias. One House subsequently licensed B.O.T.A. to Warner Records.
Soon following its release, the song went viral on the app TikTok.[10] On 2 September 2022, "B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)" replaced Rose's Warner Records label mates LF System's single "Afraid to Feel" at the top with a sales total of 43,576 compared to the Edinburgh duo's 39,616. In doing so it became the Official Chart Company's 1,400th single to reach Number 1 and made Rose the first female DJ in 22 years to get a chart-topping single (with Sonique’s "It Feels So Good" being that previous chart topper in 2000).[7][11][12]
Composition
The song was described as a "supremely fun, suave, 4×4 anthem with plenty of swagger and flirtatious lyrics that permeate your mind."[9] Dazed said that the song "has elements of UK garage, which remains one of Rose's biggest inspirations, and maybe a little dash of PC music, but really it's a tribute to 90s dance."[13]
Even though the song is based on the synth line from Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's "Let the Beat Hit 'Em, Part Two",[14] former Music Week chart analyst James Masterton[15][16][17] wrote in his Chart Watch on 15 September 2022, how the direct inspiration for "B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)" may have been with the 2001 top 20 hit "Happiness"[18] by Dutch DJ duo Sound De-Zign, a song which sampled dance vocalist Shèna's[19][14] version of "Let the Beat Hit Em, Part Two",[17] itself a UK chart hit which peaked at number 28 in 1997.
Music video
The music video was released on 15 June 2022 and was filmed in Rose's home of Hackney, London. Directed by Jeanie Crystal, it features guest appearances by drag icon Ms Sharon Le Grand, Vogue Ball founder Taboo, dancer Sakeema Peng Crook and artist Wet Mess. Julian Broad worked on the video as a lighting technician. The Lewis Carroll-inspired video celebrates the LGBTQ+ performance community.[9][20]
