BSS Industrial is a British specialist distributor of heating, ventilation, pipeline and mechanical services equipment based in Leicester. The business was previously part of The BSS Group plc until that group's acquisition by Travis Perkins in December 2010. BSS Industrial is now part of the Contract Merchanting Division of Travis Perkins plc along with Keyline & CCF.
The company was founded in the East Midlands 1899 as British Steam Specialties. High profile acquisitions included Pegler & Louden (a specialist valve distributor) in 2005. Other acquisitions by The BSS Group plc included UBM Cadel (rebranded as PTS) in 1999, Price Tools in 2006, Buck & Hickman in 2007, Birchwood Products in 2008, Direct Heating Spares in 2009 and UGS – a privately owned underground drainage merchant purchased in February 2010.
The BSS board accepted an indicative £553 million takeover offer from Travis Perkins on 28 May 2010, an acquisition which was completed on 14 December 2010 as BSS Group shares were delisted from the London Stock Exchange.
BSS Industrial is a market leader in the UK supply of pipeline, process, heating and mechanical services equipment. Its customers range from large national contractors to small, local independents. It’s primary route to market is via a nationwide network of 63 branches. This infrastructure is supported by a central warehouse at Lutterworth in The Midlands and a purpose-built tube distribution centre in Coventry.
The business also contains a member of specialist divisions servicing the industrial end-user market. These specialists offer a single source solution for specific technical products including industrial valves (Pegler & Louden), plastics (Manor Plastics), pumps (AMS Pumps) controls (Havelock Controls) and carbon & stainless steel pipe, flanges and fittings (Austin Stroud).
In 2009 BSS Drainage was established – specialist centres within existing BSS branch locations providing a comprehensive range of above ground drainage and rainwater systems. The current network numbers more than 20 locations with two dedicated drainage branches opening in recent years at Bellshill in Scotland and Canning Town in London.
In 2012 BSS launched its first Hire-It locations contained within existing BSS branches offering customers a comprehensive range of tools and equipment for every kind of plumbing and heating project. Backed by the hire expertise of parent company Travis Perkins, BSS has expanded this network to 27 locations in 2014.
As well as offering a comprehensive range of products from leading manufacturers, BSS has also developed their own-brand BOSS™ as a premier quality alternative with a history dating back over a century.
Current BOSS™ ranges include: Valves, Controls, Gauges, Technical Heating, Pumps & pumping equipment, clips & bracketing & consumables. The name BOSS™ has become synonymous with iconic products such as BOSS™ White pipe jointing compound which is bought and sold in many countries across the world.
October 2014, BSS opened a new branch in Birmingham Minworth, bringing the total number of branches to 64.
