Barren planet is a type of terrestrial planet which lacks vegetation (hence the term 'barren'), dry, and typically have little to no atmosphere. The planet's surface are mostly rocky with common features like mountains, canyons, plateaus, and craters. Barren planets are usually geologically inactive and have weak to no magnetic field. In the solar system, Mercury and Mars are barren planets, and Earth may become barren once oceans and vegetation disappear within a half billion years.
There are probable extrasolar barren planet candidates. Terrestrial planets orbiting around pulsars, including three around PSR B1257+12, are likely barren as they have almost no atmosphere and are very inhospitable.
