Based on a True Story is the second studio album by American pop punk band The Starting Line, the follow-up to The Make Yourself at Home EP was released by Drive-Thru Records and Geffen Records on May 10, 2005.
The album was mainly produced by Tim O'Heir, except for the songs "Making Love to the Camera", which was produced by Eric Rachel, "Bedroom Talk" and "The World", which were produced by Howard Benson. The latter were originally also produced by O'Heir, but were re-recorded as Geffen was not satisfied with how the original songs turned out. However, the band stated they are more fond of O'Heir's mixes, which can be found on P2P file-sharing programs.
Three additional songs recorded in pre-production, titled "Lasting Impressions", "Classic Jazz" and "The Rain Cloud and I", were cut from the album but later released online on the band's PureVolume profile. "Lasting Impressions" was a full band version of a song off their previous acoustic EP, The Make Yourself at Home EP.
The track "The World" appears in the video game Burnout Revenge.
