The Battle for the Mayor's Cup is an annual college football game played between Rice University and Southern Methodist University. The game was first played in 1916.

The rivalry comes from the fact that SMU is the premier university in Dallas, TX while Rice is the premier university in Houston, TX, currently Texas' two largest cities both within city limits and metropolitan area. Also noteworthy is the fact that SMU and Rice have traditionally been two of the smallest universities in what is now referred to as NCAA Division I FBS.

SMU and Rice have played each other all but 7 years since they first played in 1916, and have been in the same conference as one another since 1918. Each was a member of the now defunct Southwest Conference (1918-1996), then both moved to the Western Athletic Conference (1996-2005), and now both play in Conference USA (2005-Present).
