[edit] Beginnings
Becky's Fund was started in November 2006 and subsequently achieved Non-profit status in March 2007[1]. As a college student, founder Becky Lee saw first hand the effects of domestic abuse through her work with criminal law attorneys who specialized in acquitting battered women that had been imprisoned for killing their abusers in self-defense. Through the stories of these women, she was inspired to embark on a career of her own in exposing and preventing domestic abuse. She competed on "Survivor: Cook Islands” hoping to use her exposure as a platform to draw national attention to the issue. She was second runner-up on the competitive show and used her entire prize winnings to fund a domestic violence awareness non-profit, Becky’s Fund.[1] In addition, she aims to raise awareness to the lack of reporting of domestic violence cases in the Asian community.[2]
