Beenox is a video game developer, established in Québec City, Québec. Founded in 2000 by Dominique Brown. Beenox won the title of Quebec's Best Employer 2008 and is in the Top 50 World’s best video game developers, published in March 2008 by the Game Developers Research. The studio became a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision on May 25, 2005.
Between 2002 and 2006, the developer was essentially a porting house. They completed approximately 30 projects for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS, based on popular franchises such as X-Men, Spider-Man and Shrek. In 2006, they returned to original game development, with Bee Movie Game, inspired by the feature film from DreamWorks Animation. As part of Activision's E3 2007 media blitz, it was announced that Beenox was the developer behind the Windows version of Activision's Spider-Man game Spider-Man: Friend or Foe which was released in October 2007. Beenox employs about 440 employees who are developing games for consoles such as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. They released the Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, Wii and PC versions of Monsters vs. Aliens and console versions of Guitar Hero Smash Hits.
Beenox has received more than 35 awards since its creation in 2000. Among those recognitions are the Quebec's Best Employer title in 2008 and the Company of the year award in 2006, by the Quebec Chamber of Commerce. Dominique Brown also won several prizes, among which is the Young Business Personality of the year by the Quebec Young Chamber of Commerce in 2005 and, more recently, the 2008 Business Personality of the Year by the Le Soleil newspaper and Radio-Canada network. On January 13, 2011, Activision announced that due to the success of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Beenox was now the lead developer for all future Spider-Man games. That lead Beenox to create Spider-Man: Edge of Time, as well as the Spider-Man game from Columbia Pictures, The Amazing Spider-Man. Their next Spider-Man game will be The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
