Founded in 1966 [1], it bears the name of the celebrated Hungarian composer Béla Bartók and continues the legacy of earlier music schools in the city.

Purpose

[edit]

The school was created to offer advanced music training to talented young musicians in Miskolc and the surrounding region. Its educational mission focuses on providing both general secondary education and specialised music instruction, preparing students for further studies at conservatories and universities or careers in the performing arts.

[edit]

The Béla Bartók Music High School is located 182 kilometres away from the capital Budapest, and 48 kilometres from the border with Slovakia and 188 kilometres away from Hungary's western border with Ukraine.

The Palace of Music

[edit]

The institution is housed in the Palace of Music (Zenepalota), a historic neo-rococo building completed in 1927. Located on Bartók Square, this architectural landmark is a significant part of Miskolc’s cultural heritage. The building features a grand concert hall, which serves as a venue for student performances, concerts by visiting artists, and community events.

Educational Programs

[edit]

Students receive intensive instruction from educated teachers, many of whom are active performers. Alongside their musical education, students complete standard secondary school coursework, which includes music theory, composition, and performance.
