Belding is a city in Ionia County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,877 at the 2000 census. Belding is a small rural city surrounded almost entirely by farmland. Prior to 1871, Belding was known as "Hog Wallow," "Broas Rapids," and "Patterson Mills." [3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.9 square miles (13 km2), of which, 4.7 square miles (12 km2) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it (3.29%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,877 people, 2,185 households, and 1,470 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,246.1 per square mile (480.7/km²). There were 2,289 housing units at an average density of 485.3 per square mile (187.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.46% White, 0.39% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.01% of the population.
The majority of residents work in the factory or farming industries.
There were 2,185 households out of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,878, and the median income for a family was $37,111. Males had a median income of $33,160 versus $25,165 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,779. About 13.4% of families and 16.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.3% of those under age 18 and 12.3% of those age 65 or over.

Major industrial employers include Mueller Industries, which purchased the Extruded Metals site. Extruded Aluminum Corporation is also a major industrial employer.
