Belvedere Vodka Bottle

Belvedere Vodka is a brand of luxury vodka. It is produced in a century-old Polish distillery, in a manner derived from 600 years of vodka making tradition. The company is owned by the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH.[1] and internationally categorized as a super premium vodka.[2]

Company History[edit]

Belvedere hails from the small town of Zyrardow, 45 km west of Warsaw. The distillery, Polmos Zyrardow[3] was established in 1910 and continued producing vodka throughout two world wars and many European hardships. After the fall of communism, Polmos Zyrardow set out to create its own proprietary vodka and distinguish itself from other authentic Polish distilleries. It was named Belvedere after the Belweder Palace in Warsaw [4] (currently displayed on every bottle), a name that translates in Italian to “beautiful to see.” Belvedere Vodka remained a regional liquor until the 1990s, when an American named Edward Jay Phillips traveled to Europe and acquired the US distribution rights and began supplying the vodka to the U.S. market.

In 2002, the product garnered the attention of multinational luxury goods conglomerate LVMH and was subsequently acquired after a three year process. Belvedere Vodka is now sold in 100 countries with a portfolio including Belvedere Vodka, Belvedere Unfiltered, and Belvedere Intense, as well as the macerations (flavors) Citrus, Orange, Pink Grapefruit, Black Raspberry, Lemon Tea, Bloody Mary and Mango Passion.

Product Description[edit]

Belvedere Vodka is distilled from Dankowskie Rye, grown only in the Mazlovian planes of Western Poland and considered ideal for distillation due to its high starch content. The rye is blended with pure, proprietary Artesian well water and distilled four times in a process designed to balance purity while retaining character.[5] This process adheres to over 600 years of vodka making tradition.[6]

Macerations (or “Flavors”)

Macerations (or “Flavors”)[edit]

Belvedere Vodka utilizes a proprietary artisan process to produce its super premium flavored vodkas, using only organically grown real fruit, herbs, and spices. These flavors are not charcoal filtered, and are only very delicately filtered through cellulose particle filters prior to bottling. This is done with the intention of ensuring essential oils that carry fruit flavors and give mouth feel are retained.

The Belvedere Maceration collection includes: Mango Passion, Lemon Tea, Bloody Mary, Pink Grapefruit, Black Raspberry, Orange, and Citrus.[7]

(Belvedere) RED[edit]

In 2011, Belvedere Vodka partnered with (RED) to create the Belvedere RED Special Edition bottle (Belvedere) RED, from which 50% global profits are contributed to the Global Fund.

The concept was founded in 2006 by U2 frontman and activist, Bono, together with Bobby Shriver of the ONE/DATA.

Celebrity Partnerships[edit]

In 2011, Usher, the multi-platinum recording artist, teamed up with Belvedere to raise awareness around HIV/AIDS and emphasize the need for consumers to unite in support of programs that help eliminate AIDS in Africa.[8]

In 2012, award-winning singer Mary J Blige performed at a private pre-Grammy event to celebrate the partnership of Belvedere, and (RED). This event was the first of a series of RED activities to raise proceeds for the Global Fund.

In 2013, Lady Gaga performed at London club, Annabelle’s, supporting the RED Special Edition bottle raising proceeds for the Global Fund.

On 16 December 2014, Belvedere announced a partnership with EON Productions, MGM, and Sony Pictures Entertainment to promote Spectre, the 24th installment of the James Bond series.[9]

Since 2009, Belvedere Vodka has been awarded over 45 Medals, Masters Awards, and Trophies for Belvedere Vodka and the macerations Belvedere Citrus, Belvedere Lemon Tea, Belvedere Bloody Mary, Belvedere Pink Grapefruit, Belvedere Black Raspberry, and Belvedere Unfiltered. These accolades were awarded by the International Spirits Challenge, the 50 Best Vodka Awards, and the Spirits Business’ Vodka Masters in categories Eastern European, Design & Packaging, Flavored, Smooth, and Super Premium. Criticism[edit]

On March 23, 2012, Belvedere Vodka's Twitter and Facebook pages posted a branded image that was attacked for seemingly making light of rape. The image featured a man playfully restraining a woman who appeared to be trying to flee, and the slogan, "Unlike Some People, Belvedere Always Goes Down Smoothly."[18] The image was published on the social media sites for roughly 45 minutes before being pulled.

In an analysis mandated by Swiss TV RTS in May 2014, the Eurofins Scientific group of laboratories reveals the presence of sugar cane or corn while Belvedere's labeling mentions rye alcohol only.[19]
