[edit] Historical roots

Initially known as Bishop's College, this college was renamed Calcutta Civil Engineering College from 24 November, 1856, when there were only 10 students and a few instructive staff. From 1865 to 1879 the College functioned as Civil Engineering Department of Presidency College, Kolkata. In 1880 the college shifted to its new and permanent home the lush campus at Bishop's College, Howrah. From 12 February, 1920, the name was again changed to Bengal Engineering College (B.E. College Shibpur). The word Shibpur was deleted from the title on 24 March, 1921.

From May 1857 to 1992, it was a constituent college of the University of Calcutta. In recognition of its services to the nation, the college was elevated to the status of a Deemed University in 1992. The then President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, formally inaugurated the University on March 13, 1993. On 1 October, 2004, Bengal Engineering College (A Deemed University) was elevated to the status of a full-fledged university with its present name. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the President of India, formally inaugurated it as Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (BESU), on 13 July 2005.

[edit] Library

Historically, many eminent scientists, such as Prof. S. N. Bose, who formulated Bose-Einstein statistics, utilized the resource-rich library of this university. In August 2009, a brand new modern building was inaugurated in the campus which now houses the "Central Library" with facilities such as digital archiving of all books.

[edit] International Collaboration

The University has entered into the international collaborations with University of Windsor, Canada , Queen's University Belfast, at Northern Ireland and University of Pennsylvania, USA. Three students of UPenn are pursuing their summer internship at the Civil Engg. Dept., BESU in 2009. Over 40 undergraduate students of BESU have visited the Queen's University over the last 2 years (starting 2008) to pursue their summer internship.

[edit] Ranking

This institute was "Ranked 10th" amongst Top Ten engineering institutes in India by "India Today" in the year 2005.

[edit] Recruitment

Every year students from this institution form a large intake of the administration, management and technocracy, both in the public sector and private companies in India and abroad.

[edit] Campus life

The university has a lush green campus, with a number of ponds. There is a four storied central academic building, an eight storied academic-cum-administration building, a workshop complex, a three storied building for material science (which also houses a part of the Computer Science & Technology department and linked with a small skybridge to the other part of the department in the main academic building), two canteens and a university auditorium. Classes start from 8am in the morning and continue till 5pm with a one and half hour lunch break in the afternoon. There are a number of hostels out of which the 1st and 2nd year students are accommodated into Hostel Nos. 7, 8, 9 & 11 while Hostel Nos. 14, 15 and 16 are used to accommodate the PG and few 3rd year UG students. A number of single-seater residence halls like MacDonald Hall, Richardson Hall, Sen Hall, Sengupta Hall and Wolfenden Hall accommodate the 3rd and 4th year Under Graduate students. The ladies hostel is called Pandya Hall. A new ladies hostel has also been inaugurated in 2009 to accomodate Under Graduate 1st year ladies. The campus also has a well-equipped gymnasium, a swimming pool and a hospital. There is a model school named BE College Model School in the campus.

Campus activities include games in two large ground called Oval and Lords, that good old "adda" at Netaji Bhaban or at the canteen. Every year an annual fest is held together with an alumni meet - it is called REBECA, an acronym for "REunion and BECollege Annuals". It is one of the biggest cultural fest in the Eastern India.

The inaugural version of the annual technological festival/symposium INSTRUO was organized on 11-12 April, 2009. INSTRUO is the Latin synonym for "creation". The fest drew myriad technical enthusiasts to the campus from all corners of the state. Instruo'10 is scheduled to be organized on 6-8th of February, 2010. For more information visit the official website of INSTRUO - http://instruo.becs.ac.in .

There is also a College band called "Amra". There is a cultural club called FOBECS an acronym for "Forum Of BECollege Students". This club organises all kinds of activities from quizzes, poetry competition, elocution etc to photography exhibition. It also publishes a monthly magazine called Unmesh. This forum was first started by a handful of students in year the 2000 with a common vision of improving speaking abilities of students. In 2009, a new "Centre of Innovation" has been inaugurated which consists of various clubs for activities music, photography, quiz, science and research.

The college is also a seat of culture. It has not only produced hardcore engineers like Dr. Fazlur Khan, Bangladeshi-American structural Engineer, but also engineers who have made major contributions in other fields, for which they will be remembered with reverence for times to come. They include playwright and theatre activitst Badal Sircar, novelist Narayan Sanyal, former minister of Government of West Bengal Dr Shankar Sen, poet Binoy Majumdar, eminent Sarodist Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta and many others.

An outstanding feature of the campus life has always been a strong emotional bond between seniors and sophomores in the undergraduate class. Most of the very successful professional alumni today credit the BESU environment as one of the lasting influence in their lives.
