Benxi Shuidong National Park

Benxi Shuidong (Benxi Water Caves) was made a national park on January 10, 1994. The Benxi Water Caves are located 30 km east of Benxi. The Benxi Water Caves are a forest of stalactites and stalagmites within a cavern system lit by colored lighting. A river 3,000 meters long, 2 meters deep and wide enough for 20-30 boats, flows through a giant 5 million-year old cavern system. Temperature inside the cave is constant through out the year, is 12C.It is warm in winter and cold in summer, also it is open around the year. The cave provides you with warm coats, so there is no requirement of carrying a jacket during summer.

The national park includes the water caves which includes a walk in the caves as well as a boat ride for about 1 hour, a trek to a top of a mountain with an amazing view, woodstone kingdom, Taizi river rafting in a dinghy boat, and the geological museum which hosts many geological relics as well as rare specimens collected from the Benxi national park area. The entry fee is 130 yuans which includes the bus ride and access to caves & museum. For another 10 yuans you can enjoy rafting. the total tour time is around 4 hours. It also includes an unique Manchu style garden tourist hotel.

[edit] How to go?

To go to Benxi from Shenyang, you can take buses from Ming Zhu Lu near the South bus station, there are buses for every 20 minutes or so from 7.00 am in the morning for 20 yuans. It takes more or less than an hour to reach Benxi city. The bus might drop you at the outskirts of the city where you can bargain and take a taxi since the cave is only 25–30 km from Benxi city. But there are shuttle buses to Benxi shuidong for 9 yuans back & forth till 5pm from Benxi city. It takes another 40 minutes ride from Benxi city to the caves.[1]
