The University of Wuppertal (Universität Wuppertal) is a German scientific institution, located in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia.

The university, the full German name of which is Bergische Universität Wuppertal (BUW), was formed in 1972 and is located in the city of Wuppertal, within the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. In 2014/15 it had almost 20,000 students in a wide range of subjects with many interdisciplinary linkages in 7 faculties:

  • Division A: Humanities and Cultural Studies
  • Division B: Schumpeter School of Business and Economics
  • Division C: Mathematics and Natural Sciences
  • Division D: Architecture, Civil Engineering Mechanical Engineering, Safety
  • Division E: Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Media Technology
  • Division F: Design and Art
  • Division G: Education and Social Sciences

The main building of the BU Wuppertal is located in the suburb of Elberfeld on Grifflenberg and is a massive, cut honeycomb concrete purpose. The university now has 3 campuses:

  • Campus Grifflenberg (main campus) in Elberfeld, Wuppertal
  • Campus Freudenberg in Elberfeld, Wuppertal
  • Campus Haspel in Unterbarmen, Wuppertal

All three campuses hold specific parts of the University Library of Wuppertal, the main library at Campus Grifflenberg holds five specific libraries.

From 2004 until 2010, the University of Wuppertal had the second supercomputer at a German university. ALiCEnext, the supercomputer, is designed as a cluster and consists of 512 so-called Blades. ALiCEnext used in the field of elementary particle physics, applied computer science, astro-particle physics and experimental high energy physics.

The University has experienced in recent years, particularly since the inception of Schumpeter School of Business and Economics, a positive development, which is recognized by awards and rankings of different types. Since 2008, the University has received several awards:

The journal German Economic Review, the initial assessment research activities in 2008 drew the productivity of the department B - from business administration based on scientific publications. They were classified into three categories in a leading group of 50 universities in Germany. In the national founding ranking, which is carried out in two annual basis, reached the UW since 2001 on several occasions a good ranking, it was three times named best original site in Germany. Are valued mostly about 55 to 65 universities. 2009 were mainly the areas of "Entrepreneurship Education", "spin-off activity", "extra-curricular training and support" and "mobilization" Bestnoten.2011 reached the university with a third place behind the universities of Munich and Berlin (TU, respectively) for the sixth time in a row one of the top three places and so does a unique continuity in German comparison. Already in 2007, the university was ranked in the top European group in the field of physics. In July 2011, the local high school sports received two national awards.
