The event was established in 1985, and the first running was won by Pebbles. It has been run under various sponsored titles, and past sponsors have included Trusthouse Forte, At the Races and Betfred. Its present sponsor, Bet365, began supporting the race in 2008.
The Sandown Mile takes place at a meeting which features both flat and jump races. Other events at this meeting include the Bet365 Gold Cup, the Celebration Chase and the Gordon Richards Stakes.
