[edit] Plot summary

In this episode, Captain Ross assigns Detectives Goren and Eames to investigate the disappearance of Woody Sage (Scott Evans), who has been reported missing by his wife, Kathy Jarrow (Brenda Strong). She is a famous crime writer and has close ties with Ross and the NYPD. An ex-detective herself, Jarrow knows well the investigation procedure manual, and she insists that her husband is missing, and has not walked out on her.

Goren and Eames tracks Sage's movements via GPS, and soon they believe his disappearance is connected with a carjacking. But when they backtrack and examine his movements more closely, they begin to suspect Sage may have had a secret lover after all. Soon the detectives learn that he was running off with his beautiful young girlfriend, Avery Hubert (Kim Allen), and they staged the carjacking. Goren appoints that both fugitives are married to spouses twice their age, run away together and vanish mysteriously before reaching their final destination. But when Avery's parents issue a missing persons report, the finger of suspicion is settling on Roy Hubert (Eric Roberts), who has a history of violence, and now has a possible motive for revenge. Goren and Eames press him, but has an alibi: The night Woody and Avery disappeared, he was with his own mistress.

The detectives start to suspect that perhaps Woody's wife, Kathy, is involved in the case. But they take heat from Captain Ross after the investigation connects them to his close friend. Ross is reluctant to go after his friend, who wields a significant local influence, without good, solid proof. Then, Goren and Eames have a hard time believing Avery's husband, Hubert, but in fact he was with his woman-on-the-side, Trina Melda (Kate Miller).

The case turns when a family member receives a phone text from Avery that she and Woody had eloped. The text message is tracked to JFK airport, where the detectives find the cell phone in a trash bin, and later the Woody's vehicle, where is found a crucial evidence. When they learn that he has changed his name, bought a one way ticket to Mexico, and stolen money from his wife, Goren and Eames think they have their killer.
