Bhavnagar is a peninsular district of South-Eastern Gujarat.

[1] It covers an area of over 9940 km². There are close to 800 villages in this district.

Bhavnagar borders with Ahmedabad and Surendranagar districts to the North, the Gulf of Cambay to the East and South and Amreli and Rajkot districts to the West.

According to the 2011 census Bhavnagar district has a population of 2,877,961,[2] roughly equal to the nation of Jamaica[3] or the US state of Kansas.[4] This gives it a ranking of 133rd in India (out of a total of 640).[2] The district has a population density of 288 inhabitants per square kilometre (750 /sq mi) .[2] Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 16.53 %.[2] Bhavnagar has a sex ratio of 931 females for every 1000 males,[2] and a literacy rate of 76.84 %.[2]
