Big Scary Monsters Recording Company (often known simply as Big Scary Monsters or BSM Records) is a British based independent record label. Probably the most well-known acts associated with the label are Minus The Bear, Cursive (band), Tall Ships, Kevin Devine, Pulled Apart By Horses, Walter Schreifels, Andrew WK and Gnarwolves.

In 2011 BSM joined forces with fellow indie labels Holy Roar and Blood & Biscuits to form Pink Mist, an East London-based collective which releases records, promotes regular live shows and blogs about up and coming new bands. In September 2012 Pink Mist was nominated as Best Small Label in the AIM Awards.

History[edit]

Big Scary Monsters was started[year missing] by Kevin Douch whilst still in sixth form.

In Autumn 2006 BSM launched its first sub-label, Alcopop! Records. Alcopop began working with bands such as Johnny Foreigner, Anamanaguchi, Fight Like Apes and others.

2007 saw the label launch a minisite entitled Family Friend which gives users access to free MP3s, exclusive offers and extra content. Also that year, BSM organised a 5-a-side football tournament, taking place at the Linford Christie Sports Centre in London. The tournament still takes place every summer but is now held at Wembley Powerleague, pitting bands, labels, magazines, shops and other music industry teams against one another.

On 7 September 2010, the label celebrated its 100th release. Partied Hard was a DVD/CD compilation featuring over thirty promo, live and bonus videos from the label's history. It was only available between 7 September (the day after BSM099 came out) and 24 October 2010 (the day before BSM101 is due out).

In April 2011 BSM co-founded Pink Mist with fellow indie labels Holy Roar and Blood And Biscuits. A 12" compilation was released on Record Store Day to mark the launch. Pink Mist is an East London based collective releasing records, promoting regular live shows and blogging about up and coming new bands. In 2012 it was nominated for Best Small Label at the AIM Awards.

August 2013 saw another sub-label launched. Beach Community is a label/distro/merch company focusing on punk music. Its first release, a compilation entitled 'Life's a Beach', featured Balance and Composure, Make Do And Mend, The Story So Far, The Wonder Years, Defeater and more, including Joyce Manor, whom the label was named after.
