Birkhäuser Verlag is the leading European publisher for architecture, landscaping and design. Since 2010 it is part of the ActarBirkhäuser Group.
[edit] Scientific publishing
Founded in 1879 by Emil Birkhäuser the publishers program focused on regional literature. In the 1920s the sons of Emil Birkhäuser established a basis for the current scientific program with academic journals and reference books, later progressing to textbooks and monographs in the natural sciences. In the 1940s the scientific segments were expanded and gained international recognition. Publications in civil engineering followed as did further journals and book series in the ensuing years. Birkhäuser opened a branch office in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1979 which focused on mathematics and theoretical physics. From 1985 to 2010 Birkhäuser was a part of the Springer Group.
[edit] The Architecture & Design Publishing Program
The foundation for the current list was laid in the 1920s with publications on the history of art and the popular “Birkhäuser Classics” editions, designed by Jan Tschichold, on the one hand, and books and journals in the natural sciences on the other. In the 1960s the publishing program was expanded to incorporate architecture. Birkhäuser acquired the architecture list of Artemis, a Zurich-based publisher, and in 1997 engaged in a strategic alliance with Princeton Architectural Press. In 2002 Birkhäuser acquired the publishing program of the German publisher "form – The Making of Design". In 2010 the scientific program was split from the architectural and design program. Birkhäuser, with its architecture, landscaping and design list became a part of ActarBirkhäuser.
