Birmingham, Selly Oak is a parliamentary constituency located in the south west of Birmingham. It is represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, to which it elected one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post voting system.

Since the general election in May 2010, Selly Oak's MP has been Steve McCabe of the Labour Party.

[edit] Boundaries

Up until the May 2010 general election, the seat was formed from the electoral wards of Selly Oak, Bournville and Kings Norton. It includes many students and staff from the nearby University of Birmingham. The University's Selly Oak campus is located entirely within this constituency. The Cadbury factory and 'Cadbury World' are also within its boundaries.[2]

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Birmingham and the West Midlands, the Boundary Commission for England has created a modified Selly Oak constituency, which is made from the following electoral wards:

Since its creation in 1955 the seat has switched hands three times between Labour and the Conservatives. The seat has progressively swung towards Labour from being a safe Conservative seat, this was due to housing redevelopments that took place in the sixties and seventies. More recently it has acquired a reputation for electing outspoken MPs, first with the victory of Conservative Anthony Beaumont-Dark in 1979 and then with his defeat by Labour's Lynne Jones in 1992.

[edit] Proposed Abolition

Under the 2013 review the Boundary Commission of England has proposed that Birmingham Selly Oak be abolished, with Selly Oak ward becoming part of Birmingham Edgbaston, Bournville part of Birmingham Northfield, and Billesley and Brandwood becoming part of Birmingham Hall Green. The proposed changes are currently under public consultation and will be voted on by the House of Commons in 2013.
