Personal life [edit]
Bonnie Blossman was born in Fort Worth, Texas,[1] and grew up in Westover Hills, Texas. As a child, she trained in dance, theater, swimming and tennis. Her father, Robert Charles Blossman, Col. USAF (retired), is a surgeon and her mother, Diana Lucille (née Henry) is a registered nurse (retired).
Blossman moved from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to Europe as a teenager where she lived in the small village of Bundenbach and attended high school.[2]
Blossman became pregnant when she was around 33 years old (1987). She married Jeffrey Don Whatley (the father; born 1968) that same year. They had a daughter, Whitney Leann Whatley, and remained married until December 5, 1990. While married, Blossman attended Aladdin Beauty College and became a cosmetologist in the State of Texas.[3] She dropped out of high school, yet later took the GED (General Education Degree) exam, which is a high-school equivalent. After starting college at Midwestern State University in the fall of 1990, she divorced Whatley and became a single working mother in a pre-med undergraduate program. Blossman joined a competitive dance team and earned a small salary as a tap, ballet and jazz teacher at Studio 5,6,7,8 during her undergraduate education.
Blossman remarried to Jem Rock (né Jason Edward Myer; born 1975) on October 29, 1994, and a year later, had her second child, Zakk (né Zachary Eric Myer). She completed her undergraduate degree in pre-medicine / chemistry, and after taking a year off to raise her son, she enrolled in graduate school where she earned a Master of Science degree in microbiology.[2]
Blossman joined the work force as a chemist for NCH Corporation in Irving, Texas. After a year, she returned to the academic world and became a research compliance officer and later was promoted to the Director of Institutional Compliance at The University of Texas at Arlington.[4] Eventually, she left the world of compliance and enrolled in a second graduate school program, earning her PhD. in physiology from the University of North Texas.
She completed her Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine (Biology and Chemistry) in 1995, her Master of Science in Biology (Microbiology) in 1998 and her PhD in Biology (Developmental Physiology) in 2007.[5][6][7] She continued with a two year post doctoral fellowship in a developmental cardiovascular research program where her research focused on the embryonic development of the cardiovascular system.
As a hobby, Blossman also plays bass guitar for the alternative rock band, DrunkLora. Her husband is the lead guitarist; her son Zakk (now 17 years old) is the drummer; her friend Scot is the lead singer; and her daughter Whitney (now 25 years old) is a guest rap artist.
Education [edit]
Blossman earned her Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medicine (Biology and Chemistry) in 1995 from MSU,[2] her Master of Science in Biology (Microbiology) in 1998 with honors[8] and her PhD in Biology (Developmental Physiology) in 2007. She continued with her post doctoral education by completing a two-year post doctoral fellowship in a developmental cardiovascular research program in a National Science Foundation funded laboratory.
Her academic honors include multiple semesters on the University Honor Roll, Dean's List, Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Epsilon Chemical Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society,[9] National Scholars Society[10] and is listed on the Cambridge Society's Who's Who List. She is also a member of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute for Biological Science.
Since 1998, she has published over five scientific journal articles in the fields of microbiology, mammalogy, and physiology.[5][6][7]
