Braşov-Ghimbav International Airport is an airport currently under construction in Ghimbav, near Braşov, Romania right by the future A3 motorway. Planned costs of the project are around one hundred million euros. The airport will be designed to handle medium-sized aircraft with a capacity of one million people per year.
The terminal will be built modularly, allowing future construction. Intelcan Canada inaugurated the construction of the airport on April 15, 2008.[1] The initial target for completion was twenty-four to thirty months. However, due to various reasons, as of August 2010 the construction works had not started.
[edit] History
In 2006, the Romanian State Domain Agency transferred 110 hectares of land to Brasov County. Intelcan Canada was to develop and build the airport in coordination with Brasov, Harghita, and Covasna counties as well as Ghimbav city. The airport's charter was officially signed on November 14, 2005; construction started 5 months later. Intelcan will administer the airport in cooperation with Ottawa International Airport, and will have an initial 51% stake in the airport.
As of March 2011 construction had not begun.
