Braddell MRT Station (NS18) is an MRT station located on the North South Line. It is an underground station located in the northern part of Toa Payoh. At the completion of the initial MRT network, it was one of the two underground station with side platforms due to similar space-constraint problems, and the other one is Bishan. However, Bishan's layout was changed to have side platforms, not because of similar space-constraint problems, but to make transfers to the Circle Line easier. It is one of two continuous stations to have side platforms in a line. When the Downtown MRT Line opens in 2013, Chinatown, Telok Ayer and Downtown will have side platforms owing to similar space-constraint problems, breaking Braddell and Bishan as the three continuous stations to have side platforms in a line.

[edit] History
When the MRT system was built in the 1980s, majority of the MRT stations were designed to have an island platform. However, the closely built HDB blocks in the area meant that the train tunnels had to be constructed directly beneath Lorong 2 Toa Payoh, following the bend of the road. As a result of the space constraints, the station was built with side platforms.
Braddell MRT station was among the first of five stations opened for operation on November 7, 1987. The other 4 stations were Toa Payoh MRT Station, Bishan MRT Station, Ang Mo Kio MRT Station and Yio Chu Kang MRT Station.
[edit] Incidents
[edit] Bizarre robbery
The station saw a rather bizarre robbery on May 7, 2008. A robber tried to rob from the 7-Eleven convenience store within the station at 3.10 pm, but was instead locked in the shop by the cashier who dashed out of the shop. The robber could not escape and the Police arrived shortly but the robber threatened to commit suicide. The robber was finally apprehended by the Police's Taser gun and arrested.[1]
[edit] 2010 Train Disruption
Train services were delayed for eighty minutes on the evening of January 23, 2010 after an incident along the southbound direction of the North South Line. A train officer detected smoke coming from the middle of the train which was headed towards the Braddell MRT station. Passengers on the affected train were told to alight at Braddell station.
It said no fire was detected and that further checks revealed that the smoke was coming from the undercarriage of the train.
The affected train was sent back to the depot for servicing and the case is under investigation.[2]
[edit] 2011 Train Disruption
The faulty third rail damaged the collector shoes on one of four trains at this Station.[3]
