[edit] Political career

Doherty is notable as the only member of the Republican Party in the Chicago City Council, but supports the policies of Chicago's Democratic Mayor Richard M. Daley. Doherty voted in favor of the mayor's parking meter plan that leases out the revenue rights to a private firm [1]. According to the Chicago Tribune, the plan would increase the hourly meter rate at some Chicago parking metersto $6.50 in 2013 [2].

[edit] Controversy

During his 2007 re-election bid, Doherty was apparently video taped at a bar consuming alcohol to the point of intoxication and driving home under the influence. The tape was given to WGN News, who ran a story about the incident. [3] During the interview, Doherty acknowledged that after playing basketball with friends, he would regularly go out and have a "couple beers." He also stated he frequently drove home from the establishment on those nights. When asked if he was drunk, the Alderman said he wasn't because of his body type and the duration of his stay in the bar. Doherty was never charged, and he went on to win re-election that year.

[edit] Before Politics

Doherty was a Chicago Golden Gloves boxer in 1973, 1974 and 1975, and was a Golden Gloves Finalist and Champion.[citation needed] He was a Chicago Park District Champion as a boxer from La Follette Park.[citation needed]
