Brunswick High School is located at 116 Maquoit Rd in Brunswick, Maine. Durham lacking their own high school allow their student the choice to attend Brunswick High School or another local high schools.
The school has about 1,200 students and a ~14:1 student to teacher ratio. The school's proximity to Bowdoin College and the local medical centers helps to promote an academic atmosphere. Brunswick High School offers a large number of AP classes for the region with the possibility to take classes at Bowdoin. A significant portion of the schools graduates go on to attend college including the most competitive schools in the country.
Brunswick High School's previous building was built in 1937 on the corner of Spring and McKeen St with the primary structure generally running from north to south. In 1951 a wing of classrooms was constructed off the southern portion of the western side of the original structure. A second floor of class rooms added to this south wing in 1961. During 1961 another wing was added to the original structure, this time at the northern portion of the western side mirroring the first addition and creating a court yard. The two floors of the north wing provided more classrooms, a new gym, a cafeteria, a wood shop, science labs, and Home Economic rooms. By the 1990s the school was using temporary trailers as classrooms to deal with over-crowding and failed a state inspection.[citation needed] These and other factors contributed to the push to build a new school.
The "new" Brunswick High School opened at 116 Maquoit Road in 1995. In addition to the building ability to house the student population this new school contained a television in every classroom and a video announcement system. The school has a terrarium, where a large rubber tree currently resides, and a theater, Crooker Theater, with an orchestra pit. Brunswick High School has also been accredited by the state of Maine and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
