Anis Mohamed Youssef Ferchichi, (born September 28, 1978), better known as Bushido, is a German rapper. The word Bushido is Japanese and means "Way of the Warrior". He also uses the pseudonym Sonny Black, based on Dominic Napolitano. As of 2009, he sold more than 1.5 million albums in Germany alone.[1] He is the owner of the record label ersguterjunge and entrepreneur in the real estate industry.[2]

Biography

Early life

Bushido was born of a Tunisian father and a hot German mother in Bad Godesberg, a small town, part of Bonn in West Germany. Shortly after, his family moved to Berlin. Bushido grew up with his mother and brother, in Berlin-Tempelhof district of former West Berlin. He attended "Eckener Gymnasium", up to the tenth grade, and then changed to another gymnasium, before leaving school early,[3] and accumulated a criminal record for drug possession and vandalism. A judge ordered him to attend vocational training as a painter or face a jail term. During the training as painter, he met rapper Fler and both became friends. Bushido sprayed graffiti under the pseudonym „Fuchs“ (fox).[4]

1999-2001: Early career and King of KingZ

Bushido's career started in 1998, with several demo releases like 030 Squad - Westberlin. He also appeared on Es gibt kein Battle from King Orgasmus One.

In 2001 he formed together with King Orgasmus One, Bass Sultan Hengzt and D-Bo, the label I Luv Money Records, where he released his first official demo album King of KingZ. This led to him moving to Aggro Berlin, where he worked with Sido, B-Tight and Fler. The album was digitally remastered and released on CD in 2003, titled King of KingZ (Digital Remastered) and in 2004 King of KingZ 2004 Edition with some remixes over ersguterjunge.

2002-2003: Carlo, Cokxxx, Nutten, and Vom Bordstein bis zur Skyline

On October 21, 2002 Bushido released the collabo album Carlo, Cokxxx, Nutten, with Fler. They used the pseudonyms "Sonny Black" and "Frank White", which they took from the films Donnie Brasco and King Of New York. The name would appear to be a nod towards his American musical influence; in that country, Sonny Black was the mafia nickname of notorious Bonanno crime family mobster Dominick Napolitano.

On July 14, 2003 he released his first solo album Vom Bordstein bis zur Skyline. It was an enormous success for what was still basically an underground release. The album reached #88 in the media-control-charts and became one of the first German hip hop albums in the genre Gangsta rap.

2004-2005: ersguterjunge and rise to fame

Bushido in a Malcolm-X-pose, Berlin 2008

In summer 2004, because of artistic differences regarding his future solo career, he left Aggro Berlin and signed with Urban/Universal. Together with DJ Ilan, he produced a remix of the industrial metal group Rammstein's song "Amerika", which appeared as a B-side on the single.

In October 25, 2004 he released his second solo album Electro Ghetto, which reached number six on the German charts. Three singles from the album were released: "Electro Ghetto" (DE #31, 9 weeks),[5] "Nie wieder" (DE #31, 9 weeks)[5] and "Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt" (DE #29, 8 weeks).[6]

On April 4, 2005 he released his second collaboration album Carlo, Cokxxx, Nutten II, once again using his alter ego "Sonny Black" and recording with Baba Saad in replacement of Fler. Later the same year on November 4, 2005 he released his third solo album Staatsfeind Nr. 1, which reached number four on the German charts.

2006-2007: Von der Skyline zum Bordstein zurück and 7

On February 2, 2006 Bushido released the sampler called ersguterjunge Sampler Vol. 1 - Nemesis. It features artists who were signed to his label ersguterjunge.

Bushido won an Echo as the "Best Live Act" and a MTV Europe Music Award in the category "Best German Act" in both 2006 and 2007.

On September 1, 2006 he released his fourth solo album Von der Skyline zum Bordstein zurück (also short VDSZBZ). It contains no features and the Singles are: "Von Skyline zum Bordstein zurück" (released the 18. of August), "Sonnenbank Flavour" (released the 27. of October) and "Janine" (released the 9. of February).

The second sampler ersguterjunge Sampler Vol. 2 - Vendetta was released the 1st of December 2006. The only single of the sampler is called "Vendetta" and features Bushido, Eko Fresh and Chakuza.

The same year Bushido took part in Stefan Raab's "TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge".

In the beginning of 2007 Bushido founded the girl band Bisou with former candidates of the casting show Popstars.

The same year Bushido bought a mansion for himself and his mother in Berlin Lichterfelde for 1.200.000€ plus 800.000€ for sanifying.[7]

In 2007 he won his second Echo award as best hip hop/rap artist.

In the end of June 2007, Bushido announced the change of himself and his label "ersguterjunge" from Universal/Urban to Sony/BMG. The first release was 7, released on August 31, 2007 pre-selling 100,000 copies in Germany prior to release, making it a gold record.

2008-2009: Biography, Heavy Metal Payback and Carlo, Cokxxx, Nutten 2

In January 2008 it became known that Bushido founded a business together with a partner that trades with apartments. It yielded one million € in the first ten months.[2] Bushido released his biography Bushido on September 8, 2008, which reached number on the Spiegel bestseller list,[8] and his 8th album Heavy Metal Payback on October, 10 200. The album pre-sold 100,000 copies in Germany and reached Gold-status. The singles were released: "Ching Ching", "Für immer jung" and "Kennst du die Stars".

The video for the single "Für immer jung" caused some controversy because MTV stopped airing it after two days heavy rotation. The main editorial office decided, that the feature with Czech folk musician Karel Gott wouldn't fit to the image of MTV. In a meeting between Bushido and the chief editors, they offered to air the video on their other music channel Viva. But Bushido didn't agree and later decided to forbid MTV and Viva airing his videos, because he couldn't reconcile this with his conscience. Bushido wrote in his forum about the topic:

"Ich habe lange an diesem freitag überlegt. (...) für mich stellte sich einfach nur die frage ob ich diesen betrug hinnehmen oder die einzige logische konsequenz treffen soll. (...) und deswegen habe ich auf mtv geschissen. egal was passiert ich übernehme die volle verantwortung aber ich kann mir und vor allem karel gott in die augen gucken."[9]

("I have thought about it on this friday for a long time. (...) for me the question came up, whether if I should acquiesce this betrayal or come to the only logical consequence. (...) and that's why I shat on MTV. No matter what will happen, I shoulder responsibility; but I can still look myself and above all Karel Gott in the eye.")

From that time, every coorporation between Bushido and MTV ended. However the single became very successful, earning him his first gold certification for a single in Germany. In Fler's music video for the single "Das alles ist Deutschland" which featured Bushido, a burning MTV Europe Music Award can be seen. It probably belongs to Bushido, since Fler has never won one.

As Fler left Aggro Berlin and the label closed down on April 1, Bushido reached out to his former partner to end their feud. The renewed friendship led to the production of a follow up of the 2002 album Carlo, Cokxxx, Nutten. The album is titled Carlo, Cokxxx, Nutten 2, distinguished from the 2005 album, which got recorded with Baba Saad. It is entirely produced by Bushido, most of the beats first being planned for the soundtrack of the movie Zeiten ändern dich. The album released on 11 September, with the single "Eine Chance/Zu Gangsta" and the video promoting it.[10]

2010-present: Zeiten ändern dich, Jenseits von Gut und Böse and 23

The movie Zeiten ändern dich was shot from July 21, 2009 to mid September, in and around Berlin. It was released on February 4, 2010. The movie is based on Bushido's biography, in which he portrayed himself in a lead role. Uli Edel directed and Bernd Eichinger produced it.[11] After its release, the movie has been watched by 80.000 people on the release date.[12]

The soundtrack to the movie, also titled Zeiten ändern dich, released on February 19, 2010. It was released in three different versions.[13]

On June 11, Bushido with Kay One recorded a song for the start of the soccer World Cup 2010 which is dedicated to the German national football team, called "Fackeln im Wind", which he had co-written. After meeting football player Sami Khedira during the "Zeiten ändern dich - Live durch Europa" tour, Bushido had the spontaneous idea for the song.[14]

"For me it's a great honor to make a song for the national team [...] Now I hope that the song drives the players and the fans, to use all their power to bring the cup home.", Bushido said about the song.[14]

In August, Bushido reformed the group Berlins Most Wanted, which originally consisted of himself, Bass Sultan Hengzt and King Orgasmus, in 2001 during the King of KingZ area. Bushido trademark and owns the rights for the group's name by a German patent and trademark office. Kay One and Fler joined him and became part of the group. Together they released the album Berlins Most Wanted with a single also titled after the group's name "Berlins Most Wanted".[15]

On March 31, 2011 Bushido released a video on his YouTube channel, in which he confirmed his new album entitled Jenseits von Gut und Böse and the guest appearance of French rapper Booba.[16]

On April 19, his second statement video was published, where he first thanked singer J-Luv for his vocal parts on his first single Vergiss mich, which released on April 22 as digital format with the music video. He also presented the producers Rsonist and Benny Blanco, and confirmed that Xavier Naidoo from Söhne Mannheims, is featured as guest performer on the song Du bist ein Mensch.[17]

His third statement video leaked on April 28 on his YouTube channel. In this video Bushido confirmed that his label mate Kay One has some guest appearance on the album and DJ Desue has been introduced as producer. Bushido also announced that the song Wie ein Löwe could be downloaded on iTunes for the following day.[18]

American record producers DJ Premier, Swizz Beatz, Araab Muzik and R'sonist each contributed one beat for the album.[19] A meeting with Dr. Dre was also intended but cancelled by Bushido due to a too high price.[20] Later DJ Premier became a little bit disappointed about the fact, that new vocals were added to the song "Gangster" and that his DJ-cuts were edited later, and he didn't get a chance to hear it before it was released. However it is unknown if this was the idea of Bushido himself or his production team.[21]

The video for the second single "Wärst du immer noch hier?" released on May 30 and four days later (on June 3) released the CD and digital format of the single.

In 2011, it came to a reconciliation between Sido and Bushido. In additional, on August 15, 2011 Sony Music Entertainment released a press info that a collabaration album of both rappers titled 23 will be released on October 14.[22]

A teaser trailer for promoting the upcoming project leaked the same day on Bushido's YouTube channel.[23] The album was released on October 14, 2011. Its first single So mach ich es won an Echo in the category Bestes Video National.

On June 14, 2012, Bushido announced in an interview with the Bild-newspaper that he is going to found a political party with the aim to become mayor of Berlin.[24] The same month he completed an intership for the CDU deputy Christian von Stetten in the Paul-Löbe-Haus in Berlin.[25]

Controversy

Extreme right

Bushido's fan base include both immigrants and Germans, which has drawn caution and criticism in Germany. He is often criticized in the media for his misogynist, nationalist and racist lyrics and for refusing to reject some of his controversial fans.

Hip-hop has always been an expressive outlet for people across ethnic lines, primarily the underprivileged in the United States. This may give reason to the parallel between the United States and its macho persona in rap/hip hop music and Bushido's image or glorification of so-called gangsta rap. However, some point to his partial North African ethnicity and collaboration with minority artists, like Azad, Eko Fresh and Cassandra Steen, as an evidence that Bushido is not racist.[26] The Controversy was magnified by the line: "Salutiert, steht stramm, ich bin der Leader wie A" ("Salute, stand to attention, I am the leader like A") from his single "Electro Ghetto".[27] The "A" is interpreted by many as referring to Adolf Hitler or the September 11 terrorist Mohamed Atta. According to Bushido that line is a citation from a rap by Azad and "A" stands for his name, who often calls himself "A". Bushido also called this a "willkommene Provokationsmöglichkeit" ("welcome chance to provoke").

Lawsuits for assault

More legal trouble ensued following an incident at a party in Linz, Austria on July 30, 2005. Upon discovery that his tires had been slashed, he and two of his bodyguards were involved in a physical altercation with a 19 year old Austrian male from Linz, who was left with severe head injuries.[28] Bushido blames the victim for damaging all tires of his BMW 7 Series.[29] Bushido spent 15 days (August 3–18) in jail before being released on €100,000 bail. He ended up paying €20,000 to the Austrian courts and another €1,000 to the victim himself.[30] It was during this time that it became publicly known that Bushido had been married to another woman for several years, when the judge questioned him on the topic. Bushido later denied the claims of his marriage.

Copyright infringement

Bushido garnered some press coverage when his record company, Universal Music Group, sued EMI over an alleged copyright violation that derived from similarities between the cover of Deutschland Gib Mir Ein Mic and Music Is My Savior, an album by American rapper Mims.[31]

In 2007, Bushido earned more international press coverage when he was threatened with legal action by the melodic black metal band Dimmu Borgir, who claimed that Bushido had sampled two of their songs without permission, "Mourning Palace" and "Alt Lys Er Svunnet Hen". Bushido's songs named were "Mittelfingah" and "Engel".[32]

Dimmu Borgir's manager was quoted saying:

Since we were not contacted by Bushido through proper channels and told about his desire to do this, it is clear that Bushido has seriously infringed our intellectual property rights.

But no case was brought forward against him. Two songs from the Liverpool band Antimatter had also been sampled by Bushido without permission, although this dispute was settled later before any legal action was taken. The songs were "Terminal" and "Epitaph" (sampled on "Von der Skyline zum Bordstein zurück" and "Sonnenbank Flavour").[33]

September 26, 2008, Bushido was charged with international copyright infringement by the American gothic band Nox Arcana for copying music from three of their songs: "Beyond Midnight" (copied by Bushido on "Weißt Du?"), "No Rest for the Wicked" (copied by Bushido on "Kurt Cobain") and "Cthulhu Rising" (copied by Bushido on "Blaues Licht"). Nox Arcana's songs appear on their albums Darklore Manor (2003) and Necronomicon (2004). Bushido's album Von der Skyline zum Bordstein zurück (2006), which was re-released in 2007 after going Platinum in Germany.[34]

Here a section taken from the official page of Nox Arcana:[34]

The German rapper, Anis Mohamed Ferchichi, who calls himself "Bushido" or "Sonny Black" is looking at international copyright infringement charges. (...) This time, however, Bushido has stolen music from the American Gothic group Nox Arcana, who is taking legal action against the rapper and his label.

Also the French band Dark Sanctuary accused Bushido of taking songs off their material without permission.[35] For his single "Janine" he used the melody off the song "Les Mémoires Blessées". On 23 March 2010, German courts convicted him in this case to a condemnation and obliged him to stop the sales of the concerned albums, singles and samplers, including Von der Skyline zum Bordstein zurück. In addition to that, he was bound to recall and destroy all unsold copies.[36]

A video leaked online by Marzel Becker and Stephan Heller, two German music criticizers. In their video they compared Dark Sanctuary's songs to Bushido's.[37]

Bushido has also sampled two songs from Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows' album Dead Lovers Sarabande Face One, as was mentioned in a blog by Anna-Varney on her MySpace page.[38]

Feud with Aggro Berlin

The feud that began in 2004 between Bushido and Aggro Berlin is arguably the most renowned in German hip-hop history.

Personal life

Marriage with Anna-Maria Lagerblom

Bushido lives in Kleinmachnow[39] and is married with Anna-Maria Lagerblom, sister of Sarah Connor and ex-wife from Pekka Lagerblom, since May 2012.[40][41] They were engaged since February 2012 .[42] For Lagerblom it is the third marriage.[43]
