[edit] History
Regular flights from the airport started in 1961, and the terminal was upgraded to make it suitable for international traffic in 1986. Between 1994 and 1997 a further major upgrade was achieved with help from the Asian Development Bank. Formerly known as Buyant Ukhaa Airport, the airport was renamed as Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan) International Airport to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the establishment of a Mongolian State on December 21, 2005.
Mongolia aims to build a new and larger airport by around 2015 in a different location at Khoshigt valley that is about 54 km from Ulaanbaatar.[4]
