[edit] History

CBS broadcast the live action series Captain Kangaroo on weekday mornings from 1955 through 1982, and on Saturdays through 1984. From 1971 through 1986, the CBS News department produced one minute In the News segments broadcast between other Saturday morning programs. Otherwise, in regards to children's programming, CBS has aired various animated TV shows for kids, such as the original version of Scooby-Doo, Jim Henson's Muppet Babies, Garfield and Friends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as their in-house program, CBS Storybreak.

CBS Toontastic (later known as CBS Kidz) premiered on September 1992 with additional programs such as Beakman's World, The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat, The Mask: The Animated Series, Tales from the Cryptkeeper among others. The lineup has appeared to be a huge success.

[edit] Relaunch

In September 1997, CBS began contracting out to other companies to provide educational programming and material for their Saturday morning schedule (per FCC's new rules on children's programming), The first of these special blocks was Think CBS Kids (tagline is the same as the branding) with shows such as Wheel 2000, The New Ghostwriter Mysteries, The Weird Al Show, and a few others. Unfortunately due to low ratings, most of the shows were cancelled after 4 months. Much of the programming was then replaced by reruns of Beakman's World, CBS Storybreak, and Tales from the Cryptkeeper. This prompted another relaunch in 1998 as CBS Kidshow, which featured programming from Canada's Nelvana studio.[1] It aired on CBS Saturday mornings from 1997 to 2000, with shows such as Anatole, Mythic Warriors, Rescue Heroes, and Flying Rhino Junior High.[2] Its tagline was, "The CBS Kids Show: Get in the Act." [3]

In 2000, CBS's deal with Nelvana ended and the CBS Kidshow block was replaced by Nick Jr. on CBS.[1]

[edit] Schedule variances and Pre-emptions

Since 1997 CBS Kidshow programming varies in each CBS affiliate's schedule. For example, From 1997 to 1998, KTVT in Fort Worth, TX aired CBS Kidshow from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Sundays.

Although most affiliates aired all the CBS kidshow programs, some stations pre-empted or delayed some kids shows. Programs were often preempted during professional and college sports seasons[citation needed].
