MarketWatch operates a financial information website that provides business news, analysis and stock market data to some 6 million people. MarketWatch offers personal finance news and advice, tools for investors and access to industry research. Along with its flagship website, the company operates BigCharts.com and the stock market simulation site VirtualStockExchange.com. MarketWatch produces the syndicated MarketWatch Weekend television program and provides radio updates every 30 minutes on the MarketWatch.com Radio Network. It also offers subscription products for individual investors, including the Hulbert Financial Digest suite of products, Retirement Weekly and ETF Trader.

MarketWatch, formerly known as CBS Marketwatch, operated in partnership with Viacom's CBS News. Once a publicly traded company, MarketWatch was 45% owned by Viacom (now CBS Corporation after split from this company) and Pearson PLC before Dow Jones acquired it in January 2005 for over $500 million. It is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow Jones. MarketWatch is part of Dow Jones' Consumer Media Group, part of Rupert Murdoch's news empire, along with The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, the WSJ.com and affiliated Internet properties.
