The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care was set up under the Health and Social Care Act 2012 section 222. Its predecessor, the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence was set up under the National Health Service Reform and Health Care Professions Act 2002.

The Authority oversees statutory bodies that regulate health and social care professionals in the UK. It assesses their performance, conducts audits, scrutinises their decisions and reports to Parliament. It also sets standards for organisations holding voluntary registers for health and social care occupations and accredits those that meet them.

The Authority shares good practice and knowledge, conduct research and introduce new ideas to the health and social care sector including the concept of right-touch regulation. It monitors policy developments in the UK and internationally and provides advice on issues relating to professional standards in health and social care.

The Authority does this to promote the health, safety and well-being of users of health and social care services and the public. They are accountable to the UK Parliament. The Authority is committed to being impartial, fair, accessible and consistent in the application of its values.
