California's 12th State Senate district is one of 40 California State Senate districts. It is currently represented by Republican Anthony Cannella of Ceres.

District profile[edit]

The 12th District encompasses the entirety of Merced and San Benito Counties and parts of Madera, Monterey, and Stanislaus Counties.

In spite of the Democratic advantage in voter registration, the 12th district is one of the more competitive districts in the state. Denham barely won the open seat in 2002 but was reelected comfortably in 2006.

2011 redistricting[edit]

After redistricting in 2011 by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, the new district takes in the Salinas Valley and a swath of the Central Valley between Modesto and Fresno. The rural district is primarily agricultural and heavily Latino. The new district lines will take effect in the 2014 election.
