California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) is a hospital in Los Angeles, California, operated by Dignity Health. It is located in downtown Los Angeles near the Staples Center and the Fashion District, and not far from Skid Row.
The hospital was founded as California Hospital in 1887 by Dr. Walter Lindley and two other physicians. In 1921 the hospital was purchased by the Lutheran Hospital Society of Southern California. In 1988, LHS merged with HealthWest, the parent company of Northridge Hospital, to form UniHealth. UniHealth struggled financially in the 1990s after acquiring physician groups in difficulties, and in 1998, UniHealth sold its hospitals to Catholic Healthcare West. CHW became Dignity Health in 2012.
