During World War II and the Korean War, Battle Stars were issued to U.S. Navy ships for meritorious participation in battle, or for having suffered during battle conditions.
During the Vietnam War, and afterwards, Engagement Stars and Campaign Stars were issued by the U.S Navy to U.S. Navy ships performing meritorious "engagements" with hostile forces.
