Candler County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. The constitutional amendment to create the county was proposed July 14, 1914, and ratified November 3, 1914. Candler County, was named in 1914 for Allen D. Candler[1] in appreciation for his passion and diligence in compiling and editing nearly thirty volumes of the State's historical records from the Colonial, Revolutionary and Confederate periods. As of 2000, the population is 9,577. The 2007 Census Estimate shows a population of 10,550.[2] The county seat is Metter.[3]

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 248.81 square miles (644.4 km2), of which 246.88 square miles (639.4 km2) (or 99.22%) is land and 1.94 square miles (5.0 km2) (or 0.78%) is water.[4]

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 9,577 people, 3,375 households, and 2,426 families residing in the county. The population density was 39 people per square mile (15/km²). There were 3,893 housing units at an average density of 16 per square mile (6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 65.45% White, 27.08% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.16% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 9.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,375 households out of which 33.70% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.80% were married couples living together, 14.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% were non-families. 23.90% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the county the population was spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $25,022, and the median income for a family was $30,705. Males had a median income of $24,482 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the county was $12,958. About 21.40% of families and 26.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.90% of those under age 18 and 22.00% of those age 65 or over.
