Cape Fear High School is an American public secondary school in the Northeast region of Cumberland County, North Carolina. Cape Fear High School was founded in 1969 as a magnet school[vague] for the county. It now is home of the Agriculture and Science Academy as well as the Academy of Performing Arts. As of 2005, about 1500 students are enrolled in grades 9-12. Cape Fear High is located in Vander, North Carolina, though the school has a Fayetteville, NC address. Located near the Cape Fear river, it is the rural school of the county, and it serves as the home school for students from surrounding communities such as Stedman, Vander, Eastover, Wade and Godwin. Cape Fear has been listed among the "Best High Schools In America" by US News & World Report for 3 consecutive years; 2008-2010.[1]

On October 24th, 2011, a 15-year-old female student, Catilyn Abercrombie, was shot in the neck and seriously wounded by a small-caliber bullet outside of the school's cafeteria. A law enforcement officer who had been standing close to her when she was shot immediately called 911; Abercrombie was listed in fair condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, according to sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Tanna. She was able to respond to questions by nodding and shaking her head, which is an encouraging preliminary sign. The high school was subsequently locked down, along with Mac Wlliams Middle School.[2][3]
