Background[edit]

Established in 2000 by Managing Partners Varun Sood and Tom Clausen, the third Partner, Rohan Ajila, joined the Firm in 2007 and the fourth Partner Connie Fu joined the Firm in 2011. Capvent is a Private Equity house, offering both direct and funds exposure to private equity markets in Asia. The Firm’s headquarters are in Zurich, Switzerland and operate has an on the ground presence through a network of five offices in Asia. Capvent began by managing Funds of Funds, focused on the European and US middle market, as an Alpha returns oriented private equity house. The Firm’s focus has consistently been away from the large managers, as it believes that the middle market is where the real opportunity lies. As a Fund of Funds, Capvent has been unique and among the only managers where its principals come with experience in direct investing. Now Capvent also invest directly – and presently its activities are almost equally split between the direct and the Fund of Funds side. Capvent has also grown a very strong focus towards Asia where it has five offices, and the bulk of its team.

History[edit]

Capvent has focused on emerging markets since inception and, once the partners’ identified the emerging Asia opportunity as very interesting, the Firm opened its first office in Asia in 2003. Since then, Capvent has expanded the number of offices to five. Between 2000 and 2003, Capvent followed emerging Asia market developments and met with private equity managers from this region on a regular basis. From 2003 to early 2005, Capvent completed a substantial in-depth research on opportunities, threats, trends, regulatory framework, etc., while it continued meeting as many private equity managers and its portfolio companies as possible to get to a very deep understanding of the opportunities and risks.
