Carbonite is a fictional ionic compound in the Star Wars galaxy.[1] According to (fictional) literature, carbon freezing was originally a way for Bespin to transport Tibanna gas.

In Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo is frozen in carbonite, and taken to the palace of Jabba the Hutt. The procedure left him in suspended animation as a wall decoration/trophy of Jabba.
