Cárdenas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cárdenas is a surname generally of Spanish origin, however, the surname has been traced back to 9th century Sicily[citation needed]. The Cárdenas family fled Sicily due to religous persecution, and founded a city in Spain called Cárdenas. The name of the city of was later changed to Antequera. During the Spanish Inquisition, the Cárdenas family converted from Judaism to Catholicism. All persons with the surname Cárdenas can trace their origin to the same family (unless a member by marriage).
During the latter part of the 10th century, the Cárdenas family earned influence in the Kalbid court by helping the Arabic invaders undermine and eventually overthrow the Byzantine rule of Sicily. Aiding and cultural mingling among such Sephardic families and Muslim invaders was not uncommon as the tensions between Sephardi and the Byzantine imposed Eastern Orthodoxy were high throughout the Middle Ages.
