Pope Pius XII (r. 1939-58) created 56 cardinals in two consistories.

In his Christmas Message 1945, Pope Pius XII (r. 1939-58) announced his intention, to make the College of Cardinals a living picture of the universality of the Church. Included here are the 32 cardinals created by Pope Pius XII in the consistory of 18 February 1946. With this consistory, the College of Cardinals reached its legal limit of 70 cardinals.
