[edit] Career

He was an undisputed starter on the Schalke 04 U-19 team, and was the captain. He has a great merit considering that at that age group captaincy usually goes to a native-born player. He went to FC Schalke 04 at the age of 16, after playing in the U-17 World Cup in 2005, with Peru as hosts.[2] He immediately became a cornerstone in defense and an undisputed starter for the U-19 team and scored a large number of goals.[3] Schalke 04's defense did not concede with Zambrano. He was present for the first 5 games of the season, until the sixth match for which he was out due to injury.

He has been compared with Internazionale Milano defender Lúcio for his style of play and great defense, offense, and speed.[4] He has played sixteen matches for Schalke, being praised by team mates such as Dario Rodriguez.[3]

On November 10, 2007, he was promoted to the FC Schalke 04. He recently signed a four year contract with Schalke 04.

[edit] International

On March 26, 2008, he made his debut for the senior Peruvian National Team in a friendly match against Costa Rica. Zambrano started the match and scored a goal in the 45th minute, having a very good game despite the fact it was his debut and that he was playing with new players who were being tried out in the Peru national football team just like he was. (Among the players who were not present were the regular starting defender from Sporting Clube de Portugal, Alberto Rodriguez). It has been said that he will now become a more regular starter for Peru along with Alberto Rodriguez due to the suspension for 18 months of Santiago Acasiete, the other regular starter in defense. Zambrano was chosen to participate in the 2011 Copa America, but an injury suffered against Senegal in a friendly game, days before the tournament began, kept him out. The injury ended up costing him months of playing time, for his club and for his country. Zambrano is now working hard to get back into shape in time for Peru's next 2014 World Cup qualifying games against Colombia, and Uruguay. He has proven to be a great promise for the Peruvian National Team and for his club FC Schalke 04.
