Carson Butler, Jr. (born August 21, 1987) is an American football tight end who is currently a member of the New England Patriots. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He played college football at Michigan. Butler has also been a member of the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and New England Patriots.

Early years[edit]

Butler attended Renaissance High School in Detroit, Michigan, where he was a two-year letterwinner in football, playing tight end, running back, and outside linebacker.

College career[edit]

After high school, Butler attended the University of Michigan, where he saw playing time as a true freshman in 2006. He played tight end for two more seasons, switching to defensive end during the 2008 season. He finished his three-year career with 41 receptions for 429 yards and three touchdowns, as well as three tackles on defense in 29 games played.

Professional career[edit]

Green Bay Packers[edit]

After going undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft as an early entrant, Butler signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent. He was waived on July 22, 2009.

Detroit Lions[edit]

Butler was signed by the Detroit Lions on August 6, 2009. He was waived during final cuts on September 5 and re-signed to the practice squad, where he remained until his release on September 29.

San Francisco 49ers[edit]

Butler was signed to the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers on October 28, 2009, only to be released on November 3.

Cincinnati Bengals[edit]

Butler was signed to the practice squad of the Cincinnati Bengals on December 30, 2009. He was waived on January 18, 2010.

New York Giants[edit]

Butler signed a reserve/future contract on January 19, 2010. He was waived on June 21, 2010.

First stint with the Patriots[edit]

Butler signed with the New England Patriots on August 2, 2010. He was waived on September 3, 2010.

Tennessee Titans[edit]

Butler was signed to the Tennessee Titans' practice squad on September 7, 2010. He was released on September 15, 2010.

Second stint with the Patriots[edit]

The Patriots signed Butler to their practice squad on September 21, 2010. He was re-signed to a future contract for the 2011 season on January 18, 2011. He was waived on September 2. He was then re-signed to the practice squad on January 26, 2012.
