Pinoy Big Brother is a reality show that was aired over the Philippine network ABS-CBN from August 21, 2005 to December 10, 2005. It was the first show produced under a Philippine franchise of the reality series Big Brother.

Nene Tamayo of Romblon emerged as the winner of the season, taking home the grand prize worth PHP6 million (approx. $111,000) all-in-all, including the one-million peso cash prize (about $18,000), a house and lot, a Nissan Frontier, an entertainment component system, a Yamaha motorcycle, and a livelihood showcase.

The House[edit]

The Big Brother House (2005-present)

The house is located in front of the ABS-CBN studios in Quezon City.

A car is used to transfer the evicted housemate from the Big Brother house to the ABS-CBN main building.

The Big Brother House is a multi-room studio designed with walls painted with pastel colors. For the housemates security and the essence of being locked away from the outside world, the garden area is covered with a camouflage-type of fabric. It also boasts of a multi-faith altar in one wall of the house (one which has a Bible, a Koran, and twelve rosaries), making the house the only Big Brother house that has a room set aside for religious purposes (although it is said that the Arab Big Brother house had prayer rooms). And although any form of communication from the outside world is banned inside the house, there is a large flat-screen television set in the living room, used for only two purposes:

  • Airing videos Big Brother want to show to any or all housemates, especially that of the TV Mass every Sunday, and
  • To announce the names of nominees for eviction directly to the housemates and the person evicted from the house.

To complete the set up, 26 surveillance cameras are positioned all over the house to watch the housemates' every move, including the bathroom. For modesty's sake, however, images from the bathroom will be shown if the bathroom is used for any purpose other than bathing (such as gossiping).

Housemates[edit]

The show's 12 housemates all entered during a live premiere on August 21, 2005. They were introduced in a special segment during which hosts Toni Gonzaga and Mariel Rodriguez visited their houses and asked the housemates (whose faces were pixelized) to pack up their gear, giving them a special key to signify their entry in the House.

The show's producers stated that the housemates were chosen from 25,000 people who auditioned in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao. However, there were allegations that some of them did not audition at all and were chosen by network management.

The ages stated below are their ages at time of entry inside the Big Brother House. Thus, August 21, 2005 is therefore stated as Day 1.

Rico[edit]

Frederick "Rico" Barrera (born December 29, 1981) is a 23-year-old from Olongapo City, Philippines. A singer who worked in Japan, Rico was automatically nominated for committing several grave violations, including jumping into the pool while wearing his lapel mic and accidentally triggering the fire alarm while trying to cook. He was evicted on Day 21.

Chx[edit]

Chiqui Llamaso "Chx" Alcala (born June 29, 1981) is a 24-year-old from Caloocan City. Introduced to the show as a very liberated woman, Chx was known for having dalliances with some of the housemates, most notably Cass and Sam. She was automatically nominated for asking Jenny minutes after her return on Day 56 about the crowd outside the Big Brother House, in violation of show rules prohibiting Housemates from asking any new members about the outside world. Chx was eventually evicted on Day 63.

Jason[edit]

Jason Gainza (born April 27, 1980) is a 25-year-old from Batangas City. A former Overseas Filipino Worker who once worked in Saudi Arabia, Jason is known for playing pranks on the other housemates. He was crowned the second Big Placer on Day 112.

Nene[edit]

Jennivev "Nene" Santillan Tamayo (born September 27, 1981) is a 23-year-old from Romblon province. A former ROTC officer, Nene graduated from the University of the East and is best known for her long stamina and leadership skills. She was crowned the show's first Big Winner on Day 112.

Bob[edit]

Jun Bob Dela Cruz (born August 10, 1977) is a 28-year-old from Marilao, Bulacan. He is a politician who lost a bid in the 2004 elections for a municipal council seat in his hometown. He was forcibly evicted on Day 51 after being hospitalized the day before because of a heart ailment that resulted in a blackout, per a rule giving housemates who left the House under special circumstances 24 hours to get back inside. Bob eventually returned to the House for a few minutes on Day 52 to formally bid his housemates farewell.

Say[edit]

Sherylle Ann "Say" Alonzo Yutadco (born August 6, 1983) is a 22-year-old from San Juan, Metro Manila. A hotel and restaurant management graduate from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Say is a former cheerleader and court-side reporter for the NCAA. She is known for the show's first on-camera romance (with JB) and creating the love song Magmahal Muli (To Love Again) with Sam. Say was the last evictee of the season, exiting on Day 105.

Cass[edit]

Lejanie Palma Anigan also known as Cassandra Ponti (born March 1, 1980) is a 25-year-old from Davao City. She worked as a model, gracing the pages of FHM with the screen name Honey V. Cass became the Third Big Placer on Day 112.

JB[edit]

Joseph Benedict "JB" Aquino Magsaysay (born July 6, 1980) is a 25-year-old from La Union. A graduate of the Philippine School of Business Administration and distant relative of the late Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, JB lived in several gated subdivisions in Metro Manila with his family until settling in La Union to manage their business. He is known for his relationship with Say. JB was evicted on Day 35, but had a 100-second reunion with Say two days later. The reunion concept eventually became a fixture in future seasons. However, the couple broke up over issues linking him to Angelica Panganiban (over the course of a task reading stuff from the outside world).

Racquel[edit]

Racquel Acosta Reyes (born January 20, 1974) is a 31-year-old from Tanauan City, Batangas. She worked as a grade-school teacher before entering the show. Known among the housemates as "Mommy Racquel," she survived the first two nominations before being evicted on Day 49.

Uma[edit]

Uma Barum Khouny (born November 4, 1981) is a 23-year-old from Israel. Born of an Arab-Israeli father and Filipino mother, Uma had applied for a residency permit in the country at the time he joined the show. He is known for his frank and straightforward attitude, let alone never having been nominated over the course of the season. He emerged as the fourth Big Placer on Day 112.

Jenny[edit]

Jennifer "Jenny" Suico (born February 3, 1976) is a 29-year-old from Olongapo City. A married mother of one, she auditioned for the show out of boredom after returning from a stint in Japan as an entertainer. However, she made a voluntary exit on Day 28 to tend to her foster father, who was in critical condition at the time. She made the choice to leave after claiming to seek a sign from Divine Providence based on whether a housemate would carry her at all - if a man carried her, she would stay; if a woman did, she would leave. Nene eventually carried her during a light moment. Her foster father died five days after she left the house.

Jenny did return on Day 56 as part of a new twist called "The Big Switch," during which evicted housemates would have a chance to get back inside. She was eventually evicted on Day 84.

Franzen[edit]

Franzen Macaraig Fajardo (born April 18, 1982) is a 23-year-old from Sampaloc, Manila. Married with one child, Franzen became popular among lower-class audiences because of his humble roots and comedic nature. Franzen ran afoul of Big Brother for committing several violations - including mouthing words to Cass - and got nominated several times in the process, but popular vote kept him inside the house. Deliberations between the show producers and consultants from Endemol over the mouthing of words resulted in a decision to evict him on Day 86. However, Cass offered to voluntarily exit to keep Franzen inside; Big Brother considered her offer and let the public choose Franzen's fate. The next day, however, voting was stopped and Franzen's forced eviction was finalized after he violated the rules again by discussing with Jason his last chat with Big Brother inside the confession room. He eventually left the house on Day 91.

Sam[edit]

Samuel Lloyd Lacia Milby (born May 23, 1984) is a 21-year-old from Troy, Ohio. A commercial model by trade, Sam entered the house one hour after Jenny left on Day 28 and was initially called "Housemate S." Sam was linked with Chx and wrote a love song with Say. He was evicted on Day 77.

     Automatic Nomination (due to violation/s)

^Note 1 : Big Brother decided to automatically nominate Rico for eviction after the latter showed unpleasant behavior inside his house.
^Note 2 : Jenny opted to voluntarily leave the house due to her foster father's deteriorating health. Voting was not affected, however. Sam was her replacement housemate.
^Note 3 : Bob was forcibly evicted from the house due to his health condition. The previous four housemates who have left the house were put-up for votation by the public to be Bob's replacement housemate..
^Note 4 : As a newly returned housemate, Jenny was not allowed to be nominated or to nominate. Chx was automatically nominated for asking Jenny a question about the outside world - specifically the crowd who gathered to see the Big Switch twist on Day 56. Franzen was automatically nominated by Big Brother for his numerous violations of house rules and for his “disrespectful behavior” when dealing with Big Brother.
^Note 5 : Franzen got his second automatic nomination from Big Brother for his rampant violation of house rules the week before including writing a secret letter to his best friend Jason who was then nominated for eviction.
^Note 6 : The nominations were suspended by Big Brother on account of a grave violation having been committed by Franzen. Given the decision of Endemol, Big Brother called Cass into the confession room to let her know Franzen's. In a very emotional moment, Cassandra offered to voluntarily exit from the House to save him. Big Brother opened a new poll on whether Cass should leave. However, Franzen was forcibly evicted from the house for sharing with Jason that was supposed to be kept only to himself.
^Note 7 : Open voting was announced after Say's exit for the final four housemates, dubbed the Big 4.

Big Brother Final: The Big Night[edit]

After spending 112 days* inside the house, Nene Tamayo was proclaimed the first Pinoy Big Brother winner in a grand finale on December 10, 2005. The show, dubbed "The Big Night", was held at Clark Expo Amphitheater, Angeles City, Pampanga, and was broadcast live.

The four remaining housemates (Cass, Nene, Jason, and Uma), wearing blindfolds and headphones, were taken to Clark Expo Amphitheater from the Big Brother house in Quezon City by a private plane. They were then sequestered in a secret location before the actual live final. What was played on their headphones is the song Pinoy Ako by Orange and Lemons. It was played repeatedly until they went out in the secret location. Despite the rains that plagued the day of the final, 30,000 people watched "The Big Night," hosted by Willie Revillame, Toni Gonzaga and Mariel Rodriguez. According to TV ratings agency AGB Philippines, the show averaged a 39% rating and peaked at a 46% rating.

After spending 112 days inside the house, Uma was declared as the Fourth Big Placer in the Big Night finale, garnering just 52,833 votes or 4.7% of the total votes. Soon after, Cass having garnered 214,188 votes, 18.9% of total votes, was awarded the Third Big Placer status in the Big Night finale. The Second Big Placer was then named to be Jason. He garnered 312,258 votes, equal to 27.5% of the total votes.

The finale show lasted almost three hours and ended with fireworks as the Pinoy Big Brother house replica disintegrated to reveal Nene Tamayo as the "Big Winner." She garnered 554,906 votes, or 48.9% of total votes, in the Big Night finale.

* The hosts always stressed on air that the show lasted only 111 days. That is because their day count started on the day of the first episode's airing and not on the day the housemates entered the Big Brother House and an episode aired every night shows what happened the day before, even if there is a live broadcast. In the first two volumes of its DVD set, the day number is correctly tagged with its corresponding calendar date, but the beginning of the third volume pegs Day 92 on November 21, 2005, skipping November 20 from the day count probably to put the Big Night on "Day 111." September 25, 2005, the only day the program was not aired in the entire duration of the season, is also counted.

Post-Season Specials[edit]

After the first season's run ended, a series of specials were aired relating to the program.

  • Pinoy Big Brother Revealed

Pinoy Big Brother Revealed was a special documentary series hosted by Boy Abunda. Rather than just a behind-the-scenes look at the show, the series explores the concept, its popularity, the housemates themselves, the program's initially criticized morality, and its impact on Filipino pop culture, especially the rampant use of the show's logo, footage, and music by pirates. The first episode was shown live to accommodate the "Big Four," who were obviously inside the house during the taped interviews for the documentary.

  • Pinoy Big Brother: Pamasko ni Kuya

Pamasko ni Kuya (English: Big Brother's Christmas Gift) was a series where the housemates' Christmas wishes are granted by the producers of the show, especially ones that involve charity work.

  • Pinoy Big Brother Drama Specials

Pinoy Big Brother Drama Specials was a two-part mini-series showcasing the housemates' acting skills. It aired on December 26, 2005 and January 6, 2006.

  • The Final Task
The first seven evicted housemates go on a trip to a deserted resort in Subic, where lots of surprises are waiting for them. Bob finds out from CB radio that the person who invited them, a woman known only as "Mother" (Gloria Diaz), has been abducted by pirates. They have to both escape from the resort and rescue her before the pirates show up.
  • Kay Tagal Kang Hinanap (English: Finding You for So Long)
Big Brother calls on Say and the Big Four to find Franzen in Baguio. Although there is a reward waiting for them upon their return to Manila, the six are not satisfied at this offer and demand Big Brother to reveal himself. It also features a cameo appearance by fortune teller Madame Auring.

Pinoy Big Brother (Season 1) Soundtrack[edit]
