A ketone is either the functional group characterized by a carbonyl group (C=O) linked to two alkyl groups, or a compound that contains this functional group. A ketone can be represented by the general formula:

R1-(C=O)-R2 where R1 and R2 are alkyls.

The simplest ketone is acetone (2-propanone).
