The original House of Salm or the House of Ardennes-Salm, a cadet branch of the House of Ardennes-Luxembourg, began with Giselbert, Count of Luxembourg in 1019 und ruled the County of Salm until 1163.
After that, the county was split into the County of Upper-Salm and the County of Lower-Salm. These were later on subdivided a number of times.
