Category:Indigenous peoples of North America

This regional sub-category is intended for articles on particular indigenous peoples of this North America (sub-)region and related topics.

The terms Indigenous peoples and of North America as used here have a particular modern analytical criteria.

  • Using that criteria:
  • Not every ethnic group in North America warrants indigenous inclusion in this particular category. Indigenous classification reference source citations are needed for inclusion, particularly if the classification as indigenous is controversial or contested.
  • The North America sub-region consists of the North American (sub-)continent and its islands, as outlined in the Wikipedia geographical articles North America and Islands of North America.
  • Note that some particular indigenous groups may be eligible for inclusion in more than one sub-region category: because either the sub-regional boundaries overlap or the group is distributed across more than one sub-region. A given group should be placed in its appropriate regional sub-category(ies). Placement also in a main regional category also is optional when appropriate, but not in the overall parent category indigenous peoples.

See the discussion on the parent category talk page, Category talk:indigenous peoples, for suggested criteria to be used in determining whether or not any particular ethnic group should be placed in this sub-category.
