Sheephead Island

Sheephead Island is off Sunset Maine, a small village on the west side of Deer Island at the opening of Penobscot Bay. So close to the shore it is barred to the mainland for 6 hours at each at each low tide. It is within a short jaunt by boat to a yacht club dock across a cove.

Penobscot Bay is studded with islands. From Sheephead you look south to the open ocean. You look west across the islands to the Camden hills across the bay over which the sun sets.

Most Maine islands are dark and densely wooded with beautiful but unfriendly cliffy shores. Sheephead has such spectacular shore on one side of the island, but the rest of its two miles of shore is gentler with sand and pebble beaches. Its sixty five acres are also gentle and pastoral. Besides its woods it has grassy flower filled fields and country roads and paths. Also a secluded one acre swimmable pond. Among Maine islands it is Wyethian, Christina’s world. A Maine salt water farm surrounded by water on all sides.
